Bhutan - Educational Opportunity in Proposed Education City Project

The Bhutan Education City is a PPP project between the Government of Bhutan and 2 leading private players from India. The project is being developed over an area of 1000 acres which has been provided by the Govt. of Bhutan and the project site is located between Paro International Airport and the capital city of Thimphu. The project is in line the Govt of Bhutan’s long term vision of developing Bhutan into a world-class regional Knowledge hub. The promoters claim that Bhutan is an ideal location for the project as it is attractive geo-economically and provides ready access to emerging markets, while offering a pleasant climate and non polluted environment which are ideal for academics.

The project will be a township of institutions of learning set in a green (500 of the said 1000 acres will be left open and green) and self-sufficient campus where students can seek world class professional educational programs. It is a novel concept whereby multiple world class education institutes will impart education at a common campus having to access to world-class infrastructure including:

  • Student / faculty accommodation

  • Sports Complex

  • Convention Centre / auditoriums

  • Retail / Commercial areas

  • Service Apartments / Hotels

  • Research Facilities

  • Corporate Park

  • Roads and green open areas

The education institutes can focus on their core competence of imparting knowledge while the developers will provide the above shared facilities. Thus the institutes will not have to invest in creating the above services as these would be available to them through shared services provided by the developers. Since these services will be provided on a shared basis they can be developed as world class and yet cost significantly less as they are shared among a pool of much larger students. The promoters have already received interest from several global education providers. Infrastructure facilities are expected to be available from end of 2013.
