Clipper Ventures has inspired 3000 people to sail around the world in the Clipper Race. Taking place every other year, the race lasts 51 weeks, setting off from a UK port during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer. Commercial activity is a crucial element of the event, and the company considers carefully which ports to dock at to maximise business opportunities for race sponsors.
When it decided to explore the potential of South Africa in the run up to this year’s race, Clipper Ventures turned to the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) team in Cape Town, commissioning an Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) report to learn more about the market.
When the crews and sponsors arrived, UKTI organised a reception at the High Commissioner’s residence in Cape Town. The evening created both public and private interest in the sponsorship of a South African yacht for the next race, starting in 2013.
