Business is booming in Brazil

West Yorkshire Creative & Digital Services Specialists, The Works Ltd expands operations in Brazil, with help from UKTI and its global network.

Based in Leeds, West Yorkshire with just 20 staff, the majority of this company’s turnover has always come from exports as the majority of governance for international sports is within Europe. Thanks though to sheer determination, being open to new opportunities and a bit of luck, Dave Gledhill, Design Director at The Works explained how they have recently cracked a new and broader market in Brazil.

When Roy Webber, Managing Director for The Works and Dave met UKTI for the first time in 2009 the company was already leading the way in the industry, with an impressive portfolio of clients and associated events including the FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa, World Basketball Championships, UEFA Champions League Finals and ERC’s Heineken Cup to name but a few.

The company had decided to try and build their client portfolio back in 2010/11 into other sports, and whilst the business and its reputation were already well regarded in the industry, Roy and Dave wanted to accelerate business growth. With this in mind they attended the International Sport-Accord Convention in Dubai to meet with several of their existing clients and make new connections and it was here they stumbled across a UKTI exhibition stand and met representatives from the national UKTI office.

UKTI contacted The Works not long after this meeting to put them in touch with their local International Trade Advisor, Melanie Potts here in Yorkshire and Humber.

From this point on things moved very fast, as UKTI funding supported the company to attend and exhibit at a 2011 Expo Event in Rio promoting British talent in the sporting industry. This turned out to be a fantastic opportunity to meet sponsors, partners and other sports related organisations and combined with the UKTI’s Overseas Market Introduction Service, was a tremendously successful way for Roy and Dave to meet with potential clients and contacts to work with in Brazil. Later in the year The Works revisited Brazil, this time to Sao Paulo on a UKTI Trade Mission and re-established previous links made in Rio and made new contacts.
