In the North East today, over two hundred chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have bases in the region, which accounts for £9 billion, or 30 per cent of North East England’s gross domestic product. The sector alone generates 60 per cent of the Teesside economy, with 70 per cent of trade in goods that pass through Teesport, Europe’s third largest port, originating from the sector.

Large pharmaceutical companies are supported by companies able to do preclinical research and development, the delivery of clinical research and development including full scale drug testing trials, pilot scale manufacturing and full scale manufacturing, right through to active ingredients and formulation, packaging and distribution.
