The Art of Export

Renowned watercolour artist Emma Ball sketches out a bright future for her business in Japan following a recent UKTI visit to Tokyo.

Company Name: Emma Ball

Whether designing for stationery, fabric and giftware or producing limited edition prints and original artworks, Emma’s quintessentially English style has made her designs sought after, not only in the UK but all over the world.

With regular visits to international trade fairs and distributors on board in both the United States and Europe, the Nottinghamshire based artist was no stranger to the international arena. However, when a Japanese distributor expressed interest in her work she knew that she would need extra support to make the most of the opportunity.

Emma met up with Christine Johnson, her International Trade Adviser from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), who recommended joining a UKTI market visit to Japan.

Christine explains, “Understanding your market and its culture is the key to successful exporting. A market visit can help you pursue business opportunities using our global network. The visit to Japan seemed an ideal way for Emma to gauge the scale of the opportunity first hand.”

“I wouldn’t want to approach a complex market like Japan alone,” agrees Emma, “This was a new market with a very different language and culture and it’s halfway round the world. The timing of the visit was just right.”
