Pearson to bring its “WriteToLearn” online automated essay and summary marking engine to the Singaporean government’s Future School @ Singapore project.
Smart context and background
A common challenge across the Smart Cities, particularly within and between the more developed markets, is the extent to which the education system has become competitive. Schools and students, as a result of this, are increasingly looking to technological, smart-enabled solutions to provide an additional edge in terms of the quality of education that they are able to deliver whilst driving down the costs of provision.
The Company …
WriteToLearn, developed by the Knowledge Technologies group, a subsidiary of UK-headquartered Pearson Plc, is a unique automated marking technology which fulfils both of these aims.
… & its Smart success stories
Pearson’s solution, which speeds up the essay and summary evaluation process whilst providing immediate feedback to students, has been “retrained” for use in Singapore as part of the government’s Future Schools @ Singapore project. This initiative is aimed at boosting students’ engagement in learning as part of the Ministry of Education’s “3rd Master Plan for ICT” which is highlighted as an opportunity on page 101 of the full Smart Cities report.
Pearson is a member of a consortium of eight companies, including Hewlett Packard (HP), which is working with the Crescent Girls School in Singapore to bring technology to the classroom.
Tips for doing business in Asia:
Familiarity with the local landscape is key to gaining a foothold in a market which is always on the lookout for new technologies that have the capacity to improve education outcomes. Previously, the company worked with the same school through an e-Book project which began more than four years ago and, for the Future Schools initiative, was invited to link up once again.
In the absence of direct, first-hand experience, forming partnerships and links with local companies and stakeholders with a real track record in the Singapore education sector is invaluable.
