What are the Opportunities?
There are numerous export and investment opportunities for UK companies in Lithuania. The major opportunities exist in the following areas:
Shared services and business process outsourcing (BPO) – well-educated multilingual labour pool.
ICT – modern knowledge economy; companies leading among the Baltic States.
Environment – equipment and technologies, waste management, energy from waste, landfills and sorting facilities.
Energy & Power - new power plants, renovation of electricity transmission grid, cogeneration, renewable energy, energy efficiency projects, micro generation, energy measuring gadgets, CO2 collecting and storing technologies.
Lasers – globally acknowledged production and inventions.
Biotech – production does not have equivalents in Central and Eastern Europe.
Plastics – with three huge plants leading in the region.
Metal processing, machinery and electric equipment – widely-acknowledged high-tech products.
Furniture & wood processing – among the most important suppliers for IKEA.
Textile & clothing – one of the most specialised EU countries in the textile and clothing sector.
Food – internationally acknowledged and in-demand production.
Tourism – untouched ecological countryside, well developed rural tourism network, high demand for entertainment services; forthcoming Lithuanian events of international importance.
According to the data of European Commission (hereinafter referred to as the “EC”), on 15 December 2009 Lithuania had a leading position in the EU in view of the EC interim payments to the countries. Of the three funds, i.e. the ESF, the ERDF and the Cohesion Fund, Lithuania has been paid EUR 789.5 million, or 11.7 percent of the EU structural funds for the whole period 2007-2013.
