Germany – Opportunities in the German Homecare Market

The care market in Germany is undergoing change. Due to an ageing society professional care for people in need will gain importance and the homecare market is a growing sector

Currently there are 2.25 million people in need of care according to the definition of the Long-Term Care Insurance Act. According to increasing life expectancy their number is expected to rise up to 3 million by 2030 and up to 4.7 million by 2050.

The German Government is keen to keep people out of nursing homes for as long as possible and has just strengthened in-home care by providing larger benefits for caregivers, be it family members or professional care services.

Due to social changes, however, family members as wives, daughters or daughters-in-law who traditionally provided voluntary care are often no longer able to care for their relatives because they are out working and expected to be mobile in their working lives. Against this background professional care will grow in importance.

Professional care is a growing sector and will take a higher degree of priority in the future. People in need of care require medical aids that support their daily life. There is certainly a good business opportunity for British companies who provide new and innovative medical aids that ease the lives of those patients.
