Municipal solid waste management in the Dominican Republic is currently in a critical situation.

The country does not have a single sanitary landfill, 81.6% of the solid waste that is generated is disposed in open dumps and the rest is disposed in “controlled dumps”.

Average collection rates at national level are at 69% and in most of the cities located in the central region the service is not provided.
