European Union External Aid: Winning Business

Aid Funded Business offers real opportunities for UK companies.

Every year the EU spends approximately €13 billion on external development assistance to more than 160 countries and territories outside the EU. Its aim is to improve the prosperity and well-being of people in developing countries. These EU assistance programmes are implemented by the European Commission. But the European Commission needs commercial companies to make its projects happen. Much of the work is put out to commercial tender, representing significant business opportunities for consultants, works contractors and suppliers of goods.

EU External Assistance

The EU’s external assistance is divided into four programmes, divided by geographic locations:

• IPA (Instrument for pre-accession) - assistance to EU candidate countries: Croatia, Turkey and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

• ENPI (European Neighbourhood Policy Instrument) - assistance programme to the neighbouring countries of the enlarged EU including Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine.

• DCI (Development Co-operation Instrument) - assistance programme to countries in Latin America, Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and South Africa.

• EDF (European Development Fund) - assistance to ACP (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) countries.
