Millau Viaduct

Designed by Foster + Partners with Michel Virlogeux, the Millau Viaduct is a cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn in southern France. Not only does it have a dramatic silhouette, but it also makes the minimum intervention in the landscape.

Currently the tallest bridge in the world, one mast’s summit stands 343 metres above the base of the structure. The steel-decked viaduct is part of the A75-A71 autoroute axis from Paris to Montpellier and opened to traffic at the end of 2004. It has received 12 awards for design excellence, including the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2006.
