Mexico – Growth in the Certified Organic Products Market (Food & Drink)

With consumers becoming increasingly more conscious of certification issues, new opportunities are opening up for UK-based suppliers of organic products.

Business Monitor reports increasing interest healthy eating on the part of consumers in emerging economies such as Mexico, and rapid growth in the customer base for organic products. Consumers are also becoming more demanding, and won’t buy without proper certification that guarantees their purchase.

In 2009, one of the biggest Mexican distributors, Aires del Campo, reported annual sales of over 2.7 million US dollars. The company supplies almost 200 products to all of Mexico’s major food retail chains, including Walmart and Costco - and a more Premium range for the Palacio de Hierro gourmet store.

Though organics are still considered premium products, local retailers are looking to international suppliers to broaden their offering.

New lines are introduced every year, with the most successful including organic fruit and vegetables, dairy products, soft drinks, tea and coffee, oil, sweets, seeds, grain, meat and eggs. There is also demand for processed foods - such as breakfast cereals, breads, and pastas - which have to be imported since they are not produced locally.
