Wales’ First Minister Carwyn Jones opened the new department at the firm’s existing Maynard Centre in Whitchurch.

The UK-based subsidiary of US conglomerate General Electric will use the new facility to manufacture paper products used to filter liquids and gases, furthering Britain’s reputation for excellence in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.

Investing in the centre created about 150 jobs in Wales, and marked the start of new business for GE Healthcare.

Previously the company invested in stem cell therapies at the Maynard Centre, and also produces equipment for use in medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems and imaging and information technologies.

Nick Main, general manager of operations at the Maynard Centre, said: “The completion of our new manufacturing facilities reflects a significant investment in GE Healthcare’s south Wales operations and a change of direction for the Maynard Centre, enabling a strong future for the site.

“This has given us a great platform from which to grow the business and support the Welsh economy.”

Mr Jones said at the opening: “I am pleased to join GE Healthcare to mark the completion of the impressive new manufacturing facilities at the Maynard Centre.

“GE Healthcare is an important employer in south Wales and I wish everyone involved continued success in their endeavour to establish a new high quality, high productivity manufacturing site right here in Whitchurch.”
