Construction site - regeneration potential in Timisoara
Business potential for UK companies in Romania’s second city
In 2009, the trade team at the British Embassy Bucharest and UKTI East Midlands secured additional funding which enabled the trade team to build on the partnership agreement signed by the civic leaders of Nottingham and their counterparts in the Romanian city of Timisoara.
The two cities are of a comparable size and Timisoara faces similar regeneration issues as Nottingham faced in the 1970s and 1980s. These efforts will allow Nottingham businesses, specifically SMEs, to help the Romanian city with its huge regeneration programme, while maximising the use of substantial EU funding.
Following a recent successful trade mission to Nottingham, led by both the British Ambassador and Mayor of Timisoara, plans are underway for further trade missions, in both directions, which will generate opportunities for British business in areas such as environment, water, urban regeneration and rail. Strong co-operation throughout by key stakeholders such as Nottingham Council, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber and Nottingham Trent University, has enabled us to make a real impact in a targeted and strategic way.
A key outcome of this initiative is to develop a plan for a programme of exchange between Nottingham and Timisoara that will operate as a stand-alone support process once UKTI funding has ceased.
