Harland and Wolff awarded wind farm project

Siemens awards offshore substation structure contract to Belfast based Harland & Wolff.

Belfast-based engineering firm Harland and Wolff has won a multi million pound contract to build two wind farm substations.

The company, which specialises in the shipbuilding, marine and renewable energy sectors was awarded the contract by global engineering giant Siemens.

The work will include the construction of two substations located 10 miles off the coast of North Wales at the Gwynt y Mor windfarm.

Robert Cooper, Chief Executive Office at Harland and Wolff, said winning the contract from Siemens was a major coup for the company.

He said it “demonstrates our continuing development as part of the UK supply chain for marine renewable energy”.

Mr Cooper added that he hoped Harland and Wolff would be able to build a strong relationship with Siemens and work together on future projects.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the contract put Harland and Wolff on the map as it attempts to become a leader in the renewable energy sector.

And she added Northern Ireland offers many advantages for global companies seeking opportunities.

She said: “Northern Ireland’s strong knowledge base, skilled engineering capability and favourable geographical location will result in significant opportunities for local firms throughout the manufacturing supply chain to win business in an emerging offshore wind sector valued at over £100 billion.”

The Minister added: “Recent events such as the recent Renewable Marine Energy and Smart Grid Workshop, run by my Department in conjunction with the US Embassy, have also highlighted to investors the world class capabilities that Northern Ireland has to offer.”
