“We have had China in our sights since we began our export push back in 2010. We were certain our software would be well accepted in China but the real kudos is that we are replacing a system from one of the largest software companies in China”

Wearside firm takes up global challenge

Software specialists Datawright break into China.

A Wearside software specialist has taken up the global challenge and with the help of UK Trade & Investment the company has already managed to break into China.

Founded in 1979 Datawright Computer Services Ltd, in Washington, specialises in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software and invoice management systems.

The company’s Kingfisher ERP system and SNAP invoice management software is already widely used by businesses across the UK, Europe, North America and the Middle East and its export sales quadrupled following a host of new overseas orders last year.

However, keen to take up the Go Global challenge and make the most of opportunities across the globe, the company signed up to UKTI’s Passport to Export initiative to develop its export strategy.

Now the company is celebrating after its latest trip to China to sign a six figure deal to supply its Kingfisher ERP system to a global supplier of spare parts for marine diesel engines.

Ian Farrar, Commercial Director at Datawright Computer Services Ltd, said:

“We have had China in our sights since we began our export push back in 2010. We were certain our software would be well accepted in China but the real kudos is that we are replacing a system from one of the largest software companies in China.

“Even with many high-tech companies tendering for such projects we are confident we can build on our Far East presence in exciting times for this major economic centre and we’ll be joining UKTI’s Market Visit in June to help us do just that.”

The company worked closely with John Doolan, one of UKTI’s International Trade Advisers to develop its export strategy and benefitted from the specialist expertise of UKTI’s China Business Development Manager Dr Zhengming Yang.

Dr Yang said:

“Datawright has spent two years successfully targeting European markets, which has seen its exports quadruple. However, the company also had its sights set on China and we were delighted to be able to offer our support in its bid to break into this new market.

“The company’s determination and research has now paid off with the new contract worth around £150,000 and we hope its success will inspire others to take up the global challenge.”
