Sir John Sorrell - Business Ambassador Profile

Sir John has been a UK Business Ambassador since 2009.
He originated and chairs the London Design Festival which has become the model for over a hundred design festivals around the world. He is co-chair of the Sorrell Foundation, which works with thousands of young people to inspire their creativity and give them pathways into careers in the creative industries. He is chairman of University of the Arts London, one of the world’s leading creative universities, specialising in art, design, fashion and media.
Previously he founded and ran Newell and Sorrell, one of Europe’s biggest and most successful design businesses and chaired the UK Design Council and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.
Sir John was knighted in the 2008 New Year Honours List for services to the creative industries. He was appointed CBE in 1996 and was awarded the Royal Society of Arts Bicentenary Medal in 1998. He holds four Honorary Design Doctorates, an Honorary Design Fellowship, is an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy, was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2002 and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2009.
Sir John is a regular speaker and broadcaster on design and creativity. His books, `Creative Island’ (2002) and `Creative Island II’ (2009), feature inspired design from Great Britain. He is married to Frances Sorrell and they have three children. His interests include art, ideas and Arsenal Football Club.
