Advice Pays Off

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) adds value to global payroll company.

A call from an Irish company asking for a UK payroll for a British employee was the starting point for Nottingham based PBS’s global journey. 10 years later, Pam Pindar and her team of international payroll experts have built up a network of over 160 trusted global payroll and HR providers.

“The employee needed to be paid in sterling and have his National Insurance contributions paid to the appropriate government bodies,” explains Pam Pindar, Managing Director of PBS Ltd. “This sparked the idea of providing international payroll services and HR advice.” PBS’s international services can benefit companies who are thinking about setting up a business entity overseas and want advice on payroll, taxes and employment law in a respective country, or those companies who are just considering initially employing small numbers of employees overseas and want some advice and guidance on what they need to do to pay people.

New opportunities

Pam first came across UKTI when, as an East Midlands Business Champion, she was invited to go on a UKTI market visit to Hungary.

“I found the visit really useful,” she says, “Not only did I meet many likeminded people but I made a lot of contacts and Managed to set up Hungarian payroll provider partnerships.”

“The UKTI commercial team were very knowledgeable and more than helpful. We had a reception at the Embassy which was in itself impressive and I was able to have a stand to display PBS literature and met many influential invited guests UKTI has been instrumental in providing global advice and guidance particularly when PBS has come up against a barrier, for example in Brazil and Argentina where labour and tax laws can be quite complicated. Pam contacted her International Trade Adviser Gordon Binnie and PBS was soon put in touch with a UKTI expert in each country who was able to open doors and signpost PBS to the correct government departments.

Gordon explains, “We can provide expert trade advice and practical support to UK-based companies wishing to grow their business overseas. With 2,400 staff and a presence in 96 countries, UKTI can assist you on every step of the exporting journey.

New contacts

“We can always find a provider ourselves, but it’s the commercial contacts we find useful,” says Pam. “It can take ages to hunt down the right information from overseas without UKTI support. We’ve been shoved and shunted between government departments in Brazil.” Pam continues, “If you go to UKTI, they speak English, understand your business, find you the right person, put you in touch and even organise a teleconference for you.”
